Michael Owen determined to get back into England squad

“One or two games for your club before an international isn’t enough and that is what the manager has said. But people don’t want to write that, they want to turn it into ‘Owen snubbed again.’ We’ll let them have their fun and we’ll see if I can get back into the squad.”

Although Owen is philosophical about his continued absence from the national side when he has only just returned from an injury, he admitted the exclusion does hurt.

Having scored 40 times in 89 appearances for his country, Owen’s hunger for international football is far from satisfied and he will use that pain as added inspiration as he looks to keep the Magpies in the Premier League between now and the end of the season.

“I don’t ever feel as though the door has been shut on me,” said Owen, who was speaking before his latest omission from Capello’s England party.

“You’d have to ask the manager though. It is a concern of mine because I love playing for my country, but it doesn’t keep me up at night.

“I know for a fact, if I do well for Newcastle, playing well and scoring goals, then, without sounding too big headed, I know I’m one of the best strikers in the country. People can write good or bad things, but if I’m playing well my international career should take care of itself.”

Owen’s form has been a matter of national interest ever since he broke on to the global stage at the World Cup in France in 1998 with a wonder goal against Argentina.

Since then, the 29-year-old has amassed a huge personal fortune, as well as an avid interest in horse racing. Yet, it is wealth and a hobby that has done nothing to diminish his commitment to football.

He added: “That drives me on to keep performing. If I wasn’t bothered when I haven’t been picked, or when someone had criticised me, then I would have to question myself. If that was happening when I looked in the mirror I’d have to wonder why I was playing football anymore.

“It does wind me up in a way, but only because I force myself because then I know that still means I’m fiercely competitive, which is something I’ve always been and will continue to be.”
