A BIKE display team is to attempt a world record at a Northumberland event later this month.
The 3Sixty Bicycle Display Team will attempt to perform the highest vertical drop on a bike, a drop the equivalent of a two-storey house, at the Glendale Show near Wooler on bank holiday Monday, August 27.
The team, Houghton-le-Spring based Ian Drummond and five others, will be performing a series of stunts in the showfield’s main ring in four shows throughout the day.
The world record attempt will be made at the end of the fourth show, where Ian, whose team is appearing at Glendale for the first time, is hoping to break the current four-metre record by free-falling on his bike from 4.3m.
He said: "We wanted to make this attempt at a big local show that was on our doorstep so the Glendale Show fits the bill perfectly.
"I have to leap from a 4.3m high platform. There’s no suspension or landing ramps permitted with these records, we simply have to absorb all impacts through technique. I’m expecting a good deal of whiplash on this one, even if everything goes smoothly."
The show is now in its 119th year and will feature entertainment in the main ring from the Devil’s Horsemen, the Jamie Squibb Motorcycle Stunt Team and a parade of livestock.
