Northumberland Premier League cricket round-up: League set for exciting climax

THE CALCULATORS are out in the Northumberland League as Blue Flames and Bedlington head into the final weekend all square on points.

The leading pair have played pass the parcel with the league leadership for the last few weeks, with no more than a point separating them either way, but the Flames failed to dislodge the last Blagdon Park batsmen and so relinquished their single-point advantage despite their win.

Flames eased their way to an all- out score of 213 in 46.3 overs, Fiaz Ahmed (50) top-scoring, and Park ended on 165-9 after 50 overs with Shaun Collins making 60 and Rob Walker picking up 4-25.

Meanwhile the Terriers sealed Clara Vale’s relegation fate after their skipper ran riot with the ball.

Mohammed Rehan didn’t look in too much trouble with 10 boundaries in his 49, but then Paul Straker decided to take matters into his own hands and in just 5.5 overs picked up six wickets for just eight runs, the Vale pulled down for 92 and Bedlington bagging 30 points.

Bomarsund will join the Vale in Division One, a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Berwick confirming what they already feared. Stephen Thain (60) was Bomar’s star performer as they were bowled out for 139, but with Scott Middlemist (3- 50 and 38) heading Berwick’s challenge, the game was quickly up.

In other highlights a brilliant spell of 6-26 from Tristan Douglas ensured Corbridge overcame Bates Cottages by five wickets, and Andrew Wood took 4-1 as Stocksfield toppled Alnmouth by eight wickets.
