DRIVERS are being encouraged to sign up to a new volunteering website.
They will be able to help ferry people to the doctors, shops and to visit friends.
The Getabout scheme, run by the charity WRVS and funded by Northumberland County Council, will give groups in Northumberland the opportunity to look for local people to help out.
Coun Isabel Hunter from Northumberland County Council said: “The Getabout scheme is a superb resource for those residents who don’t have access to public transport.
“The council provides funding for the scheme as it gives good value for money where supported bus services cannot be justified on cost or usage grounds.”
She added that the new website is part of the new Love Northumberland campaign.
Carol Nevison, service delivery manager from WRVS, said: “We are always looking for new drivers and anyone who has a valid driving licence and some spare time on their hands can help us by offering their services.
“The scheme offers a fantastic opportunity to use your skills and time to the benefit of other people within your community.”
