Bonfire night safety message issued in Northumberland
Oct 9 2010 By The Journal
A CAMPAIGN has been launched by emergency services and council chiefs in a bid to ensure that bonfire night passes over safely in Northumberland.
The county’s fire and rescue service is working closely with Northumbria Police and county council officials on an education programme to reinforce stay safe messages. Firefighters will be visiting schools and community groups throughout in the next few weeks to raise awareness about the potential dangers of fireworks and bonfires.
The council’s neighbourhood services team is already removing piles of waste and unauthorised bonfires from public land and environmental health officers have issued warnings about adding dangerous and toxic items to garden bonfires.
Groups across the county have been encouraged to notify the fire and rescue service about bonfires they intend to hold, so they can have a free safety assessment done.
