Man in critical condition after car crash near Hebron

A MAN was in a critical condition in hospital last night after the car he was travelling in collided with a lorry.

The A1 was closed for a number of hours, from 5.40pm, following the crash near Hebron, north of Morpeth, in Northumberland. The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) airlifted the patient to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), where his condition was described as critical but stable.

Police were called to the scene where traffic built up in both directions. A spokesman from the GNAAS said: “The Great North Air Ambulance attended a serious road traffic collision on the A1.

“The doctor we were carrying on board was able to stabilise and transport the critically-ill patient to the RVI. The road journey would have taken about 25 minutes but the flight took just five minutes.”

The patient was understood to be suffering from multiple injuries.
