A FILM made to encourage people to move to Northumberland will be part of an archive show which will run in the county for a month.
The free screenings will be at the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre in Hexham from Saturday until March 10.
The footage comes from the Northern Region Film & Television Archive (NRFTA), who are the custodians of the North’s public moving image archive.
Northumberland – A New Life is a 1970 promotional film made for Northumberland County Council. The film features families who had recently moved to the area, including the Richardsons from Whitley Bay and the Target family from Killingworth.
Other films include World of my Own: Basil Bunting, which was made in 1969, and A River Speak, made in 1947.
The first, about North East poet and former Journal sub-editor, Basil Bunting was produced by Tyne Tees Television, and he is shown visiting locations in Northumberland and Cumbria which inspired his work.
The second is a travelogue narrated by South Shields-born actress Dame Flora Robson which looks at the history, culture and industry of the Tyne Valley.
The film contrasts the Roman heritage and rural economy of the western settlements including Hexham and Corbridge. Geoff Keys, artistic director of the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, said: “These films will give our visitors an insight into the lives of people in this area from over 60 years ago, for many people still a living memory.”
The films run for approximately 25 minutes in total, played on a continuous loop, from 10am-4pm Monday-Saturday.
