PLANS to build a specialist emergency care hospital in the region have taken another step forward.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has officially bought the site alongside the A189 to the south of East Cramlington for the specialist hospital.

The purchase paves the way for work to start on site next year. Northumberland County Council’s planning and environment committee approved the planning application for the development in October.

The hospital is part of the Trust’s £200m investment to improve healthcare for people in Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Brian Griggs, director of estates and facilities at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We have worked closely with the landowner since the site was identified following rigorous analysis which confirmed there were no alternative sites which were suitable, available or viable.

“We are delighted that the sale has now been completed and it is another step forward for the development, which will bring significant health benefits for people in Northumberland and North Tyneside.

“We look forward to starting work.”
