DEDICATED gardening fans are digging in to help ensure that the proud North East tradition of leek growing and showing doesn’t die in their community. Peter Kerry and three of his green-fingered friends have manned the trenches to save their local leek show from becoming the latest to disappear because of a lack of support. Along with fellow growers Dave Clough, Dave Austin and John Anderson, Peter, 61, has taken over the running of the annual Northumberland Club and Institute Union (CIU) Open Leek, Vegetable and Flower Show, which was set to fold this year. They have found a new venue for the show – Cramlington Village Working Men’s Club – and secured £2,500 in prize money and sponsorship to stage it later this month. The four friends are fighting back against what has been a steady decline of traditional leek and flower shows in recent years. The show will now be held at Cramlington WMC on Wednesday August 31 and Thursday September 1. Peter, a self-employed haulier, said: "I am old-fashioned when it comes to leek growing, and I just couldn’t let the show fold." For more information on how to enter call Peter Kerry on 01670 735 672.
