A CRAMLINGTON resident is hoping to get an organised bonfire event brought to the west of the town.
Local community campaigner, Barry Flux of Beaconhill in Cramlington, has called on the town council to bring an organised bonfire event to the Beaconhill area of Cramlington to stop unofficial ones over the Halloween period.
He asked if it was possible to have an organised event in the west of the town at the annual meeting of Cramlington Town Council at the end of last month.
He said: “Every bonfire night there are unofficial bonfires across the Beaconhill estates.
“I call on the town council to organise an event which could be enjoyed by all residents in Cramlington, and could have positive benefits for the community.
“The safety of children is my primary concern. I have no doubt a bonfire is not everybody’s cup of tea, but I think it is important that we have a safe event, rather than unorganised bonfires which are dangerous.”
The question was met with positive response from the council who said they would take the suggestion on board. The police, who were also at the meeting, also gave a positive response to the suggestion and said it would be a good thing for the town to have more organised bonfires for safety reasons.
Barry added: “We see two existing events which are arranged by Cramlington Town Council, the town fair in the east of the town and the Christmas tree light switch-on in the village. It would be great if the western side of town could also be involved in a community event.”
