ONE of Cramlington’s most successful exports has applauded the advent of the town’s new newspaper.
And comedian Ross Noble reckons he might just have the perfect inaugural campaign to get us off to a flying start.
On hearing the news that Cramlington was poised to get its own newspaper, 34-year-old Ross was visibly taken aback with delight.
“Good lord... really? I’ll look forward to seeing that,” he said, during a recent flying visit to his native North East.
Ross, who was on Tyneside mentoring a group of aspiring comedic writers, reckons the new Blyth and Cramlington Extra would be the perfect platform from which to launch a campaign to leave a Noble mark on his birthplace.
He said: “I still haven’t been asked if I want a statue or a street named after me.
“My secret desire... which I’m now making completely public, is that I would like the dual carriageway outside my school named after me: Noble’s Way would do it.
“I quite like the idea of the road that I used to stare blankly out of the window at during science lessons, taking my name. That would be smashing.”
The school Ross was talking about is now Cramlington Learning Village.
When Ross was a pupil, it was known as Cramlington High School, and it wasn’t somewhere he relished going to.
Ross has often talked about his lack of academic prowess... hence the memories of staring out of science classroom windows.
He thinks renaming the road after him, would be wonderful.
“And I can’t imagine it has a name as things stand,” he added. “It’s probably just one of your regular A roads. Surely it wouldn’t take much to stick up a sign.”
Further research has however unearthed the fact that the road Ross is referring to does currently have a name: Dudley Lane, although we’ve yet to discover whether this refers to a particular Dudley.
In terms of the official process, which would be involved in a renaming of a carriageway, Steve Stewart, chief executive of Northumberland County Council said: “We have a procedure for dealing with requests for changing a street name and this would always involve taking into account the views of the local residents.”
