Night patrols will tackle vandalism at Blyth Golf Club

ACTION is being taken to tackle problems of anti-social behaviour, disorder and vandalism at a Northumberland golf club.

Northumbria Police officers have teamed up with officials at Blyth Golf Club in the wake of incidents involving youths hanging around the course and causing trouble.

The problems have been happening mainly in the evenings and involve youths intruding on the course, causing damage to greens and flags and stealing garden tools and golfing equipment. There is also evidence that they have been congregating in gangs and drinking in the woodland areas of the course.

Police have recently arrested four youths in connection with damage at the course.

Now, in a further bid to stamp out the problems, they have pledged to step up night patrols in the area around the course at key times and regularly check with club staff that there are no issues.

Any youths found on club property will be moved on, or dealt with more severely if they are found committing offences.

Sgt Garry Neill said: "We will try to identify those responsible and put a stop to the problems. If we find young people drinking then we have the powers to confiscate the alcohol and call their parents out to come and collect them.

"’I’d also urge any golfers who, while out on the course, see any kids drinking or causing disorder to report it to police as soon as they can. We take a very serious approach to anti-social behaviour as we are fully aware of the impact it can have on individuals and the community as a whole. We won’t tolerate it and neither should the public."
