Banner celebrates the history of Bates Colliery

A BANNER representing the three Blyth pits has been hung in its new home.

The Bates Colliery Banner has been put up in The Blyth School Community College’s Open Learning Centre.

The banner, which represents the three Blyth pits of Bates, Isabella and Crofton Mill, depicts a scene from Bates Colliery.

Denis Murphy, NUM General Secretary for Northumberland spoke of his delight in seeing the banner in such a fitting location.

He said: “It’s not only a place of learning but also in a location which would ensure that the young people of Blyth will see it and be aware of their local history.”

Following the official ceremony last month, a free social event took place in the open learning centre.

More than 70 people attended the ceremony to welcome the banner to its new home and to commemorate the rich mining history of the area.

Entertainment was provided by members of the Ashington Colliery Band, who played a selection of music including theme tunes from James Bond films.
