STUDENTS from a Northumberland school have been taking part in hands-on lessons to find out how enterprising they can be.
The pupils at The Blyth School Community College were treated to creative lessons by the social enterprise, “Reaction”, which formed five years ago to help inspire young people.
reaction works closely with schools across Northumberland, helping children and young people to develop an awareness of their own business talents.
During the sessions, Year 12 students were asked to consider enterprise and entrepreneurship and were challenged to describe the qualities required to become a successful businessman.
reaction staff encouraged students to come up with examples of successful entrepreneurs, particularly “home grown” success stories and tried to dispel some of the myths or misconceptions of what being a successful entrepreneur actually means.
Students took part in a number of activities, one of which was to create a sculpture which represented their local area, whether that be their school, their friendship groups or the wider community.
Armed with balloons, sticky tape, coloured pens, paper and scissors, the students were given a limited amount of time to plan their creation, discuss how it represented their chosen community and then produce it.
The students worked in small groups and were asked to choose a representative to make a short presentation and to explain the reasons for their chosen designs.
Most of the teams managed to develop their product in the time-scale but the challenge highlighted the need for good communication, time management skills, creativity, resourcefulness, the need to follow the brief and to work closely as a team.
