South Beach burglaries prompt police warning
Aug 2 2010 By The Journal
A STRING of burglaries has sparked a warning from police for people to lock out opportunistic thieves.
In recent weeks, offenders have been targeting the South Beach of Blyth, Northumberland, and getting into people’s homes through open and unlocked windows and doors.
Between 11.45pm on July 27 and 6am on July 28 thieves got into a house in Gately Avenue via an unlocked window and stole a handbag inside before making off. At about midnight on July 27 thieves were disturbed at another unlocked property in the same street. They struck a third time in Teale Avenue where they got in through an unlocked door and stole a laptop.
Blyth neighbourhood inspector Trevor Oakley said: “Thieves have simply chanced their luck and got in. We have thieves in the area looking to take advantage of homes, sheds and cars that are left unlocked. Thieves are opportunist and by making sure their homes are secure people are making it less inviting to any potential thief.
“It’s distressing for anyone to have their home broken into. By following some simple crime prevention advice members of the public can help stop themselves from being a victim of crime. “
