Blyth festival to celebrate renewable energy

RENEWABLE energy will be celebrated at a festival held in a Northumberland seaside town which looks out over an offshore wind farm.

The Blyth Renewables Festival - to be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 14 and 15 - aims to showcase the impact which green energy sources can have on people’s lives.

The town’s flagship National Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC), the Port of Blyth and Northumberland County Council have joined forces to stage the event.

The Mir, one of the largest operational tall ships, will be berthed on the quayside over the weekend as an early example of renewable energy use.

Visitors will be able to board and tour the vessel.

Other festival highlights include a programme of street entertainment, a green fairground, boat trips around the harbour and live music.

NaREC, which is the main sponsor, will be one of a number of organisations represented in a special ‘renewables village’.

On the eve of the festival, the Mir will sail around Blyth Bay, past the first two offshore wind turbines in the UK.
