More people caught by the tide at Holy Island

A LIFEBOAT, helicopter and coastguard crew were called after yet more people were caught by the tide at Holy Island. Crews said they could not understand why people were still not heeding the constant publicity, even though they risk losing their car and possibly their lives.

At 2.16pm yesterday, Humber Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat to help two people who were in the water near their stranded Volvo car.

As the Inshore Lifeboat reached the scene, the RAF rescue helicopter arrived and was able to winch the casualties to safety.

Lifeboat operations manager Ian Clayton said: “I really am dismayed that despite all the publicity, we are still getting visitors stranded on Holy Island causeway. I find it really difficult to understand how apparently rational people can drive their cars into the North Sea, and then wonder why they suddenly find themselves stranded.”

Salt water can easily write cars off and insurance companies may well not pay out on any claim, classing these actions as contributory negligence.
