THE region’s top female players were also on the oche at Bedlington chasing glory in the £775 Milton Anderson Memorial Trophy.
Claire Stainsby defeated Julie Thompson in the final to claim the £250 first prize.
To secure her place in the final, Stainsby defeated Pat Davison and Liz Kelly before taking the spoils against Debbie Waugh in the semi-final.
Thompson made the best of a first- round bye as scheduled opponent Helen Dobson was unavailable. She then found good form to beat Chris Caldon before fighting off a spirited effort from Donna Rydz 3-2.
The nerves and tension were to show early on in the final, both girls knowing from county experience how good each other is.
Stainsby finally showed the killer instinct to take a 23-dart winning leg.
Her nerves were now gone as scores of 85, 85, 180, 82, 37 and a double 16 in a 16-dart leg gave her a 2-0 lead.
Two scores of 140 from Thompson still could not tame Cleveland girl Stainsby as she powered in 140, 140, 100 and 59 and checked out with a 62 in a winning 15-dart leg to claim the title.
