Darts: Luke, Prins and Wright make Mark at Bedlington

THIRTY-SEVEN players battled it out for the final two finals night places in the Mark Williams Memorial Trophy.

Bedlington Station WMC was the venue for the event, which is sponsored by the Newcastle Beer Company.

Micky Luke, Dave Prins and Keith Wright would be the main players to feature.

Prins made his way to the fist final of the night with wins over Jimmy Summers, Ian Arkle, Robbie Parker and Arthur Dobey.

Luke gained victories against Keith Fletcher, Greg Falcus, Chris Dobey and Gareth Steel before taking the spoils against in-form Keith Wright in the semis.

The second half of the draw saw Prins again centre stage.

Good wins against Michael Gradwell and Jimmy Summers set him on his way.

Against Robbie Parker, with the score at 2-2 and Parker hovering on a finish, Prins took out 167 on the bullseye – 60, 57, bull – to clinch the game.

He then beat Greg Falcus and Paul Bell to reach his second final of the night.

That would be against Keith Wright, victories against John Young, Richie Camfield, Graham Fletcher, Arthur Dobey and a tough semi-final triumph against Mark Wilson gaving him the chance to take on Prins.

It was a nervous start to the first final between Luke and Prins.

There was double trouble for both in the first leg before Luke finally took the lead.

Then 140, 100 and 95 in a 17- dart game put Luke two up before Prins found his range, hitting scores of 137, 180 and 140 to get back into the game at 2-1.

More heavy scoring with 100, 140, 140 and a 76 checkout in 14 darts made the game all square.

Prins had found his range by now and completed the win with 140, 100, 95, 134 and double 16 in another 14-dart game.

Wright took to the oche against Prins in the second final and again a tentative start to proceedings followed Wright opening his account in a 20-dart winning leg.

Prins burst into action to level the tie with scores of 121, 140, 140, before getting his head in front with a 14-dart leg consisting of 100, 177, 80, 120 and double 12.

Wright’s never-say-die attitude kicked in and scores of 100, 100, 180, 82 and a checking out on 39 made the game level in 14 darts.

Then scores of 98, 100, 95, 100 were enough to see Wright take a well-earned place on finals night.
