Tenants move into homes on site of Bedlington Terrier pub

TENANTS have celebrated Christmas early after moving into new homes built on the site of a former pub in Northumberland.

The 10 bungalows have replaced the Bedlington Terrier – named after the town’s renowned breed of dog – which was closed down several years ago and later demolished.

The supported housing development was built at Hatfield Close by social landlord Bernicia, and has now been officially opened by Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery. He joined Bernicia chairman Ian Armstrong, county council housing services manager Julie Young and Care Trust commissioning manager Margaret Jones to have tea with the residents.

The 10 bungalows are the first phase of a £7.4m project which will provide 20 bungalows and 39 sheltered housing units to meet the needs of people currently living in Bedlington’s ageing Glebe Road and Glebe Court.

The partnership scheme will provide homes – together with access to care and support services – to allow the residents to live as independently as possible. Mr Armstrong said: “The project represents our commitment to people who need just that bit of extra help to remain living in their communities.”
