A SCHOOL minibus saved by Kevin Keegan is once again on the road.

The former Newcastle boss had presented the minibus to Cleaswell Hill Special School at Guidepost, near Morpeth, back in 2008 on behalf of the Variety Club. It transported the special needs pupils all over Northumberland.

But when school chiefs found the catalytic convertor had been stolen from under the bus one night early this month, they were grounded.

The school could ill-afford the £1,300 repairs but, when King Kev heard of the vandal attack, he immediately pledged a cheque from himself and wife Jean.

Bob Gladwin of the Variety Club in Newcastle volunteered to share the costs and, yesterday, Bob presented the cheque to school head Kevin Burdis.

Bob said: “It was a great gesture from Kevin and Jean and we were more than happy to match it with our own cheque. What really matters is that the bus is back on the road for the kids.”

Keegan said: “The main thing is that the bus gets back on the road.

“Whoever did this should be really ashamed of themselves. They must know that special needs children need their bus, and to take it off them like this was awful.”

Bob also handed out £2,500 of vouchers from Toys R Us to pupils, as well as tickets for the panto Aladdin at the Nissan Sports and Social Club at Washington.

Cleaswell Hill assistant head teacher Mike Jackson said: “The school is very, very grateful to Kevin and the Variety Club.”
