Football: Gary Middleton in call to Ashington fans

GARY MIDDLETON has called for the Ashington public to come out in force as the FA Cup returns to Woodhorn Lane on Saturday.

The Colliers boss has promised those making up a “12th man” an exciting second- qualifying-round clash against Blue Square Bet North side Vauxhall Motors.

Middleton said: “We are looking forward to what should prove to be a very exciting tie for the club.

“The financial rewards for the club are always a massive bonus, but the real thing for the players is playing in such a prestigious competition.

“I cannot compliment them enough, they put in an outstanding performance against Shildon in the last round.

“It went all the way to penalties and we had to play the last 20 minutes of extra-time with 10 men after Gareth Bainbridge was stretchered off and taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder.

“However, we deserved to win after leading 2-0 and being pegged back to 2-2.

“Shildon were never going to lie down but we dug in with 10 men, the character was superb from everyone and we will need more of the same on Saturday.”

Middleton added: “The introduction of the Conference North teams means the standard goes up another notch, so it will be a tough game against Vauxhall Motors.

“That is the reward for the players, to challenge themselves against a team from a higher league.

“It will be interesting to see the difference and how we handle it.

“The good thing is that following Saturday’s win at Billingham Synthonia we are unbeaten in seven games.

“We are on a bit of a roll now and confidence is high.

“We just need to keep that going, work hard and play to the best of our ability.

“We need the supporters to come out in force, to back the team and make a 12th man on Saturday.”
