Man held over Ashington lead thefts

A MAN has been arrested by police following incidents in which lead was stolen from the roofs of houses in Northumberland. The 21-year-old local man is being held in custody and being questioned by Northumbria Police in connection with the theft of lead flashings in Ashington.

It follows four reports of metal being taken from roofs in Sycamore, Maple, Chestnut and Portia streets in the early hours of Monday.

Yesterday, Ashington Neighbourhood Inspector, Jackie Coleman, said: “I’d urge residents to ring us if they see anyone acting suspiciously in their neighbourhood at any time.

“If there are people in your area that don’t look like they should be there, or appear suspicious, then give us a ring and we’ll check it out.

“Proactive work is being done by police to identify metal thieves. Officers are working closely with partners and local scrap metal dealers to identify and take action against those involved.’’
