A ROMANTIC dinner for two can put you in the mood for love. But did you know it's not only the intimate surroundings and the soft music? What you choose to eat can play its part.
For thousands of years people have used foods to enhance their libido, not to mention their fertility. Today research has discovered that some of the most well known aphrodisiacs do in fact contain vitamins and minerals that contribute to a healthy reproductive system as well as a healthy libido. So as Valentine’s Day approaches, why not plan a menu to include the top 10 most romantic foods?
1. Oysters
Raw oysters are probably one of the best known aphrodisiacs and there is research out there to prove it. Raw oysters are very high in zinc which is vital for healthy sperm. Zinc is also important for the production of testosterone, a hormone which is essential for sex drive.
2. Celery
While it may not be the first food that springs to mind when it comes to romantic dinners, it does contain andosterone - an odourless hormone that when released through male perspiration is said to be attractive to the opposite sex.
3. Bananas
Their reputation for being libido enhancing is supported by a theory that the bromelain enzymes they contain improve sex drive in males.
4. Avocado
Although avocados have quite a voluptuous feminine shape they are also associated with male sexuality. Whilst they could resemble a body part, their creamy fruit also contains high levels of folic acid and vitamin B6. Both are essential for energy production and hormone control.
5. Almonds
For centuries almonds were considered a fertility symbol. Almonds contain essential fatty acids which are important for hormone production in both men and women. The aroma of almond is supposed to arouse passion in females, so try lighting some almond scented candles during dinner.
6. Eggs
Eggs are a symbol of fertility and re-birth. Hen eggs are high in vitamins B5 and B6 which balance hormones and help your body manage stress, both of which are crucial for a healthy libido. Some people reportedly eat raw eggs prior to sex to increase their libido!
7. Asparagus
Asparagus is an elegant vegetable, which seduces palates with its phallic shape and delicate taste. In 19th century France bridegrooms were reported to eat three courses of asparagus at their prenuptial dinner. Asparagus is a good source of B vitamins for energy as well as potassium, vitamins A and C.
8. Figs
Figs were said to be Cleopatra's favourite food. The sweet purple fruits are both sexy in appearance and texture. Many cultures have associated figs with fertility.
9. Garlic
Garlic is probably the last thing that springs to mind when planning a romantic dinner for two. However, if you can stand the smell, garlic contains an ingredient called allicin which increases blood flow to the sexual organs.
10. Chocolate
Chocolate will always be welcome at a romantic dinner for two. It contains a substance called phenylethylamine, a chemical believed to produce the feeling of being in love.
So start preparing your shopping list and get cooking. Happy Valentine’s Day.
