Franco's, Jesmond

Daughter opted for spaghetti bolognaise – made to Franco’s secret recipe – and although it is not actually on the menu, the base sauce is used in other dishes and the restaurant was happy to accommodate.

It was tomatoey, meaty and full of spicy flavour. I thought I could detect a hint of nutmeg in the sauce, but Franco wasn’t giving away any secrets. It was, however, one of the tastiest spag bols we’ve ever tasted – and even had the edge, dare I say it, over husband’s homemade recipe!

We took a little time out before embarking on la dolce vita. Husband made a beeline for Franco’s special tiramisu made with Nutella. An unusual combo, it has to be said, but which somehow worked.

Chocolatte coulant was my choice, the soft chocolatey sponge oozing molten chocolate in the centre, accompanied by whisky-flavoured ice-cream and crisp and light shortbread biscuit for dipping.

Teenage daughter’s choice of Foresta Nera, Amareno cherries in maraschino chocolate sponge, served with vanilla and cherry ice-cream brought a smile to her face, the chocolate and cherries combination working well together.

Quality food in a very stylish setting, this felt like a treaty night out for all, but at prices that won’t break the bank.
