Cooking up new food skills

FISH lovers can hook on to new culinary skills with the opening of a regional training school.

The Seafood Training Centre, based at the Fish Quay, North Shields, was officially opened yesterday.

It offers an array of cooking courses and preparation aimed at both those within the industry or those wanting to brush up on their skills.

Margaret Fay, chairperson of regional development agency One NorthEast, officially opened the purpose-built centre which was also attended by senior figures within the fish industry and local chefs including Adam Hegarty, of the Bay Bistro.

The Seafood Training Centre North Shields has been established since 2001. The opening of the new school comes just days after the first ever Journal Taste North East England Food and Drink Festival attracted thousands to the Gibside estate in Gateshead.

Our campaign aims to encourage more people to buy local, use local and eat local, supporting the region’s thriving gastronomic sector.

Yesterday, a training centre spokesman said: “The centre is already renowned for its delicious fish filleting courses, covering skinning, steaking to filleting and eating.

“Its facilities are aimed at both those working in the fish industry and the catching sector to those who simply with to improve their own fish culinary skills.”
