Nov 23 2007 By Carys Jones, The Journal
FOLLOWING last week’s search to find the region’s top 10 books and sporting moments, The Journal is now looking for the top entertainers of our time.
Joining the debate on the streets of Newcastle, readers told us yesterday who their favourites are.
You can send in your suggestions for any of these topics and your top 10 Northerners by email, post or by voting on our website, www.journallive.co.uk
We will compile votes in each category in the run-up to Christmas before unveiling the top favourites.
Yesterday Ant and Dec were high on the top 10 list of entertainers.
“I know it’s cheesy, but I really like Ant and Dec. Jonathan Ross is another favourite, too,” said Kerry Graham, 36, a receptionist from Lemington.
Lee Stephens, 22, and Michelle Boak, 21, both sales assistants of North Shields, agreed: “We really like Ant and Dec. They’re good presenters and they’re funny, too.” Also giving us their thoughts were – Norma Henderson, 66, a book-keeper, of Gateshead: “I like all the older comedians, and programmes like
Jina Cooper, 66, a retired librarian, of Gateshead: “I like Lenny Henry, but I’m not a fan of Billy Connelly, he’s far too foul-mouthed for me.”
Evelyn Turner, 51, a cook, from Throckley: “I like Bradley Walsh, but that’s got a lot to do with the fact he’s in
Sheila Mulligan, 50, a marketing manager, of South West Denton: “I like toilet humour, so I would have to say Julian Clary or Roy Chubby Brown are favourites of mine.”
Jane Burne, 37, a marketing manager, of Walker: “Paul O’Grady’s dry wit usually makes me laugh.”
Dave Blower, 64, and Veronica Blower, 61, both retired from Fenham, but now living in Cyprus, said: “The likes of Tommy Cooper and Morecambe and Wise always stand out.”
