Living together

Coun David Slesenger, Lord Mayor of Newcastle

As Lord Mayor of Newcastle, I am honoured to represent an exciting and multicultural city which has welcomed people from many countries and diverse backgrounds for many years.

It is currently home to people from 52 nationalities which each add to the cultural vibrancy of Newcastle.

The city, like the rest of the region, has welcomed asylum seekers and refugees who are escaping atrocities in their home countries to establish new lives.

My own family settled here more than 150 years ago, and I often reflect on the world my ancestors came to and how they must have lived. They were a young couple with two young children - an immigrant family without English as their first language.

However, they put down their roots and I thank them for their wisdom in coming to Newcastle and I marvel at their drive to survive.

Each generation of my family has tried to give something back to the city, and as Lord Mayor, I want to help other people do the same. It is for this reason that I have chosen diversity and inclusivity as the theme for my civic year.

Over my 12 months in office, I aim to use my role to celebrate the range of cultures and people who make up our vibrant city and make sure everyone, regardless of background, is given an opportunity to play a full role in Newcastle life.

Already I have met many wonderful people from city communities which have helped make Newcastle such a welcoming place.

I have also joined in multi-cultural celebrations, such as the event in the Banqueting Hall to celebrate International Refugee Week.

Perhaps the most moving so far has been my involvement in our citizenship ceremonies. They are an opportunity for us to reinforce our commitment to welcome all newcomers and for individuals to demonstrate their own pride and commitment in the city which they now view as their home.
