David tailors his regime to fit the bill for anyone

If you're not a gym person but want to tone up, then personal trainer David Fairlamb's latest fitness programme could be what you're looking for.

It combines fresh air with the promise of weight loss and improved aerobic fitness, stamina, strength and endurance.

And all you need to bring along to the weekly sessions is, in David's words, "the best gym ever invented" - your body.

He has launched a 45-minute Saturday morning Beach Bootcamp on Tynemouth's Long Sands.

As well as warming up and cooling down, each session consists of aerobic and bodyweight exercises - with a few other pieces of equipment David and his team may decide to throw in (think running up the dunes, skipping and ladder drills).

The sessions are open to anyone and you don't have to worry about being left behind. David says: "No matter what your ability, each session will be tailored to match your own fitness level.

"We currently have people from 17 to 56 years old coming along, and everyone goes at their own pace. It's as much about having fun as looking and feeling better."

Trainers include David and former Scottish rugby international Joel Brannigan, who was forced to retire from the sport in 2005 with a neck injury after 10 years in the top flight.

Joel, who has since gained a number of professional fitness training qualifications and works with David in his gym at Tyne Metropolitan College's North Shields campus, says: "I decided to use the experience I gained in clubs such as Newcastle Falcons and Edinburgh to help others achieve their fitness goals."

The Beach Bootcamp sessions start at 9am and cost £5 on the day. Meet opposite the Grand Hotel.
