A BUSY indoor market has been transformed into a gory theatre featuring demon barber Sweeney Todd after the end of the working day.

The Market Hall in Durham played host to murder and mayhem as the setting for a new theatrical production, Sweeney Todd and the String of Pearls.

One of the stalls was transformed into the sordid pie shop run by Sweeney’s sometime lover Mrs Lovett, where body parts of the demon barber’s victims were known to be part of the grisly pie ingredients.

Another Soup Productions, a Durham University Student-led theatre company, has created the new version of the classic story of love and murder in the murky alleyways around Fleet Street, London.

With a cast of 20 actors, accompanied by seven musicians, the walking performance wound its way through an eerily deserted Market Hall.

The production began last night and will run until Saturday with two performances each evening, at 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

The promenade nature of the production and the location mean that audience numbers are limited to 30 per performance, so advance booking is recommended.

Tickets can be booked through www.dur.ac.uk/theatre/listings.php or reserved by emailing production@ anothersoup.co.uk

Another Soup Productions is well known for choosing unusual venues for its performances.

These have included Hild Bede College and The Empty Shop.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: “It’s wonderful that the historic Market Hall has been part of the inspiration behind this new production.”
