Councillor Veronica Jones
A COUNCILLOR from Northumberland had to be cut from her car and taken to hospital following a crash.
Coun Veronica Jones, Conservative member for Ponteland on Northumberland County Council, was involved in the collision in the Manchester area on Friday night.
Coun Jones is said to have been returning home from visiting one of three daughters who lives in the area when her Citroen car was in collision with another vehicle.
Firefighters had to cut her from her vehicle and she was taken to hospital, suffering from breathing difficulties and cuts and bruises.
Coun Jones was detained for two nights and, on Saturday, told colleagues on the council she hoped to be released yesterday and to return to her daughter’s home.
Her car is said to be a write-off.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said it would not be able to provide details of the collision yesterday.
Conservative group leader on the county council and fellow Ponteland member Peter Jackson last night said: “She had been badly bruised, but there was nothing broken or life-threatening.
“The accident was bad enough for her to have to be cut out of her car, so was a fairly serious accident.
“She was very badly shaken, very badly bruised and cut.”
Coun Jones lives at Wallridge, near Stamfordham.
She represents the Ponteland West division on the county council and has done so since 2005.
The councillor is the authority’s lead member for older people and chairman of the Older People’s Partnership Board.
She is also a member of the council’s communities and place overview and scrutiny committee and its West area committee.
Coun Jones is also a governor at Ponteland Middle School.
She is said to have two daughters from a first marriage and a third from a second.
Coun Eileen Armstrong, secretary of the Ponteland Conservatives, last night said Coun Jones is a popular person and councillor, and that she would have the best wishes of all who know her for a speedy recovery.
“She is everybody’s dream as a councillor, she is heart-warming, she is very much on par with people.
“Everyone is concerned about Veronica, we heard about it and we are actually waiting to find out the facts because I do not think anybody knows exactly what is going on.”
