NEWCASTLE United fans can look forward to a cultural tour of Europe after receiving a mouth-watering draw in the Europa League.

The side will play Bordeaux, Club Brugge and Maritimo in their bid to top Group D and make it through to the final stages of the league.

First out of the hat for Group D was the French city of Bordeaux, the world’s wine-making capital.

The historic city is perched on the banks of the river Garrone in the south west of France. Among the 960 million bottles shipped out of the port every year are some of the world’s most expensive vintages, which can cost up to £10,000 a case.

Fans can hop over to Bordeaux after a flight from Newcastle via Amsterdam, catch the Eurostar from London, or get a train from Paris.

Next on the list is Flemish city Bruges in Belgium, an easy Eurostar ride from London and also served from Newcastle Airport.

The city is a tourist draw, with streets lined with colourful houses, a network of canals which has earned it the title the Venice of the North, and plenty of shops selling Belgium’s most famous food, chocolate.

The city also has a Belgian beer museum, as well as a museum dedicated to the humble potato chip. Most Belgians will argue that they, not the French, invented the french fry.

Though Bruges has a reputation for being cold and wet, the final team in the group promises warmer climes.

Maritimo are based in Funchal, a former trading port and the biggest city on the holiday island of Madeira.

Famed for Madeira wine the sub-tropical island of Madeira is actually closer to Africa than mainland Europe. Covered in greenery, it’s known as Ilha Jardim, the Garden Island, or the Pearl of the Atlantic and has a spring-like climate all the year round.

It is easiest to travel to Funchal with package deals, as direct flights are hard to find – but it might not be one for the nervous flyer.

The city was once famed for its hair-raising airport with a terrifyingly short runway ending at a cliff over the Atlantic Ocean, although it has been expanded in recent years.
