SPEEDING drivers on the roads of a Northumberland town are being targeted by police – with help from a local councillor.
Routes in and around Cramlington are facing a blitz on speeding by Northumbria Police, after safety fears were raised by parents and other local residents.
Officers are carrying out roadside checks on passing motorists using a new device, which has been funded by local councillor Wayne Daley.
Coun Daley, who represents Cramlington North on Northumberland County Council and is also a town councillor, used his personal small scheme allowance from County Hall to pay for the state-of-the-art Unipar SL700 speed gun.
It is being used by neighbourhood police officers as part of the battle to put the brakes on motorists who drive too fast.
And Coun Daley says local people can call for the device to be used in their own streets.
Recent roadside checks have targeted Station Road, Horton Drive, the B1326 in East Cramlington and Northumbrian Road, all routes where residents have reported safety fears.
