AN obsessed man has been jailed for four years after launching a vicious hammer attack on his former partner.
Habibur Rahman attacked Rumi Shadid outside the school where she worked after she ended their relationship.
Unable to accept it was over, Rahman turned up at the Tyneside primary school where teaching assistant Miss Shadid worked and waited for her to come out.
After more than three hours lying in wait he pounced when she finished her shift at lunchtime, grabbing her and then raining sickening blows to her head with the hammer as her terrified colleagues looked on helpless.
Now Rahman, 24, of Farndale Road, Benwell, Newcastle, has been branded a danger by a judge and locked up for four years.
Judge Esmond Faulks, at Newcastle Crown Court, told him: “You subjected her to a terrifying ordeal, threatening to kill her. You did not care for her at all, you just cared for yourself and were pulling her about like a rag doll.
“The probation report says you present a high risk of causing serious harm to Miss Shadid because you can’t accept the relationship is over.”
Rahman and Miss Shadid, 21, had started going out after meeting on the internet.
There was even talk of marriage between the pair but when Miss Shadid talked it over with her parents they expressed concerns about Rahman’s suitability.
When Miss Shadid eventually agreed to end it Rahman became threatening and started emotionally blackmailing her.
Then one day in July he turned up to confront her at Burradon Primary School, in North Tyneside, where she worked.
When she came out he began harassing her and telling her he wanted to get back together but she told him it was over.
He then took hold of Miss Shadid and pulled a hammer out of his bag.
At that point members of staff, including the headteacher, came out of school to see what was happening.
Rahman shouted to the victim “You know you are going to die, I will kill you, I will kill you”.
At that point, as he heard police sirens approaching, he lifted the hammer into the air and brought it down hard on her head. Fortunately Miss Shadid was not as badly injured as was first feared, suffering a cut and swelling to her head, tenderness to her neck and bruising to her hand and arm.
In a victim impact statement she said: “I’m now fearful for my safety and am scared he will come and hunt me down and pursue his obsession when he gets out of prison.”
Rahman pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.
As well as the four-year prison sentence he will be on an extended licence when he is released after the judge said he posed an ongoing danger to the victim.
Christopher Mitford, mitigating, said: “He found it difficult to cope with a decision made by a third party that they should not be together.
“He tells me he had not eaten or slept for a week beforehand. He regrets it, he deeply cared for her.”
