Tyneside Metro artwork reflects a world of travel

Artist Kimberley Gaiger at her exhibition at Tynemouth Station

A JOURNEY of discovery for artist Kimberley Gaiger ends at a Tyneside Metro station tonight.

Her artwork in the enclosed bridge over the tracks at Tynemouth station will be launched at an event which ties in with the regeneration of the 1882 complex.

The artwork – titled Transitions ... From Here to There – will be in place until the middle of next month and includes 3,000 mainly Metro tickets.

Kimberley collected discarded tickets at Metro stations and system operator Nexus also provided extra stocks.

The display also features copies of 19th Century railway tickets and the most recent Pop Cards.

“The railway ticket may represent anything from a journey to the next village or to a trip half-way around the world and back,” said Kimberley, a Northumbria University fine art graduate.

Last year Kimberley, who lives in Heaton in Newcastle, won the Deloitte sculpture exhibition and she is currently a graduate fellow at Northumbria University.

She said: “The display reflects how many people pass through Tynemouth station every day, how each ticket can represent one person, and the different journeys which are taken.

“It also reflects the way the station itself has been though so many transformations.

“Transitions reflects not only the past, present and future of the Metro ticket, but also the advance in rail travel and technology and how more and more journeys are being taken.”
