OPERA star Sir Thomas Allen will replace author Bill Bryson as Chancellor of Durham University in January, it was announced last night.
Sir Thomas, 67, who was born in Seaham Harbour, County Durham, will officially become the university’s 12th chancellor after his appointment was approved at a meeting of Durham’s Convocation – an assembly of members of the university – in London.
The appointment of the world-renowned baritone will come as a surprise to many. Broadcaster Stephen Fry was a popular front-runner, with widespread support among the students.
A Stephen Fry for Durham University Chancellor group was set up on Facebook, while other possible candidates touted included former prime minister Tony Blair, comedian Rowan Atkinson and explorer Robert Swan.
Sir Thomas, a former pupil at Robert Richardson Grammar School in Ryhope, Sunderland, said: “As a County Durham boy I am extremely proud and honoured to be appointed as Chancellor of Durham University.
“No matter where my life and career have taken me, Durham has always held a special place in my heart so it is a particular privilege for me to accept this prestigious role.
