APPETITES have been whetted by the news that The Journal’s food and drink extravaganza descends on the Metrocentre this weekend.

Foodies are expected to turn out in their thousands to show their support for some of the region’s finest artisan producers and suppliers.

Gastro and culinary treats will be on the menu today and tomorrow for visitors to the event devoted to all things food and drink. The Taste at the Metrocentre festival takes place at Town Square, outside the House of Fraser store.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to support local as there will be 35 stallholders selling all manner of tempting produce from cheeses and meats to baked items, jams and relishes and locally-brewed tipples. And tempting scents will waft through the malls as some of the region’s top chefs take to our mobile kitchen to demonstrate seasonal dishes using local produce.

Visitors can pull up a seat and see them in action.

They include Jane Lovett, food writer for The Journal and cookery demonstrator, restaurateur Bob Arora of Sachins, Newcastle, Simon Wood, head chef at the critically-acclaimed Pan Haggerty, Newcastle, and his sous chef Kelvin Linstead, Andrew Laurie of Bridge Street Inn & Restaurant, Morpeth, and ‘Veg Lady’ Gwen Young of Riverford veg box company.
