THIS year's Great North Run has been described as the "most inspiring ever" after hundreds of people queued to back a Journal campaign.
More than two million people watched live coverage of Sunday’s Newcastle to South Shields half marathon and many of those who finished the race signed up to back the Great North Fitness Revolution to build on their success.
David Boland, from Heaton in Newcastle, finished the 13-mile race in two hours and 25 minutes and is determined to be fighting fit for the event next year to beat his time.
The 37-year-old, whose right arm was left paralysed by an accident as a teenager, is proud of his achievement and backed the Great North Fitness Revolution.
The accounts administrator, from Cartington Terrace, also raised more than £700 for Cancer Research UK.
He said: “The Great North Run is one of those things that I’ve always wanted to do. It was a lot harder than I was expecting.
“I had done 10 miles in training but those last three miles are so difficult.
“But it is a lot of good fun because there are so many people out as you are going round. I was so pleased to be at the end.
“When I first finished I thought there is no way I’m doing that again, but then I started thinking that if I train harder I can get a better time next year.”
David Hart, communications director of Nova International, which organises the run, said: “The images of yesterday’s Bupa Great North Run were inspirational to many people. A lot of those running are a testament to what can be achieved when you’re working towards a personal goal.
“We’re proud that events like the Bupa Great North Run encourage so many people to participate in sport and strive to lead a healthier lifestyle.
“The Journal’s Great North Fitness Revolution is an opportunity to set yourself manageable goals and work towards a better way of living for you and your family – we’re looking forward to seeing many more first timers on September 16, 2012.”
Nova International chairman Brendan Foster added: “We have enjoyed another fantastic Great North Run weekend.
“The athletes and fun runners and, of course, the Red Arrows have helped to make this the most inspiring Run ever.”
