The show, sponsored by Durham County Council, is run by the new North East Horticultural Society and is based in a vast hangar at the South Causey Inn at Stanley in County Durham.
It also incorporates the National Pot Leek Society (NPLS) show and the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies event.
The winner of the NPLS event with two leeks of 221.89 cubic inches was Alan Davison, which completes a hat trick of firsts with his CIU world record performance of 375 cubic inches at Cramlington and also success in his local show at Blyth’s Newsham Victory club.
Painter and decorator Alan said: “It’s been a fantastic year for me and I am cock a hoop to win the NPLS title.
“I have been ninth and fourth in past years and I have been knocking on the door, and now I have done it. I have been on a roll and It’s brilliant.”
The aim is to establish the show as a national fixture and a major visitor attraction.
It already offers the highest prize money in the country for individual classes., with the single winning heaviest tomato worth £75. Show organiser and former leek champion John Soulsby, from Kibblesworth in Gateshead, said: “ People have travelled from all over the country and we had five world record holders taking part .
“ The aim is to make this a major event for the North East.”
