PRINCESS Anne heard at first hand how potential young offenders’ lives had been changed, during a visit to Durham yesterday.
The Princess Royal visited County Hall as patron of the charity, The Butler Trust, to hear about the pioneering work of County Durham Youth Offending Service.
Her visit came after the Head of County Durham’s Youth Offending Service, Gill Eshelby, was awarded a commendation for her work to divert young people from a life of crime by The Butler Trust in March of this year.
The Princess spent more than half an hour talking to staff involved in all aspects of the service.
The Butler Trust, an independent charity set up in 1985, recognises outstanding practice in those who work in prisons, probation and more recently youth justice. This was the first year the Trust has awarded excellent practice in youth justice.
Gill received her commendation from the Princess Royal, who is patron of the Trust.
As a follow-up, the princess visited Gill’s place of work before going on to HMP Durham, which was also awarded a commendation earlier this year for its contribution to the health and wellbeing of offenders.
Princess Anne received a parcel of Durham produce including Cotherstone cheese from Teesdale and beer from Durham Brewery, after unveiling a plaque to commemorate her visit.
