Alan Shearer set to be an Entertainer again

IT will be a sight to excite every Newcastle United fan – Alan Shearer pulling on the black-and-white number nine shirt to spearhead the club’s attack once more.

Next month supporters can see him back in the Magpies’ team as he leads the line against Liverpool in a charity re-match of the game dubbed the Premier League’s greatest-ever match.

Alongside some of the team’s greatest players from the days of ‘The Entertainers’, the match will recall Newcastle’s famous 4-3 defeat at the hands of Liverpool in 1996, to raise money for charity.

Shearer will be joined by players including Les Ferdinand, Rob Lee, Ruel Fox, Paul Bracewell and John Beresford, as well as Colombian legend Tino Asprilla.

And the team will be managed by Kevin Keegan.

Shearer said: “On paper it’s a decent line-up but on the pitch it might be a little bit different with all the bodies that’ll be out there. I’m sure they will be all different shapes and sizes but it’s a good line-up and it’ll be great to get involved with all the guys again.

“Hopefully we can entertain a little bit. I miss the 90 minutes on a Saturday. Whatever you do after that, whether you go into the media or management, you certainly can’t get the 90 minutes of adrenaline that you get out on that football pitch.

“I think a lot of people have said it was an incredible game, and one of the best games they’ve ever seen. Whether they’ll be saying that after this game remains to be seen.

“I’m sure a few of the lads will be working on their fitness as we speak.

The players were selected from United’s 1992-1997 period, branded ‘The Entertainers’, and they will face a Liverpool side chosen from the same period, managed by former manager Roy Evans and ex-player Phil Thompson.

And there will at least be one man on the pitch who will have the fitness to kick a ball as Run Geordie Run hero Mark Allison will be kicking off the match.

Steve Wraith, of Players Inc event management, said: “The big thing for me is Kevin Keegan managing the team. Kevin’s got a lot of respect from everybody up here and a lot of people would like to say thank you and pay their respects to him on the day.”

The match takes place on October 9 at 1.30pm, at Newcastle Falcons’ ground, Kingston Park. The charities benefiting are the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, NSPCC, The Alan Shearer Centre, CHUF and Pathways 4 All.
