TWO armed raiders fled a petrol station empty-handed after they were tackled by a brave shop owner.

The knife-wielding, hooded robbers burst into Nedderton Service Station near Bedlington, Northumberland, just after 8.30am as owner Khizer Kahn was working alone behind the counter.

They demanded the 39-year-old hand over cash from the till. He tried to calm down the robbers but, when one took a swing at him with a knife, he grabbed a wine bottle from the shelf behind him and took on the pair.

The two intruders then ran out of the shop, at which point Mr Kahn called the police.

Shortly afterwards, two men were arrested by police as they tried to hitch a lift from motorists at another petrol station a mile and a half away in Stannington.

Mr Kahn’s brother Javed, who also works at the petrol station and store, arrived after the incident.

He told The Journal: “They pointed the knives towards him and he told them to cool down. He moved a few steps to get out from behind the counter and one of them came towards him.

“My brother tried to grab the hand the robber had the knife in, but he swung it at him and tried to attack him. Khizer stepped back and then picked up a wine bottle and confronted him. He said something like ‘Come on then’ to them and then they just left.
