THE cancer foundation set up by Sir Bobby Robson has reached a huge milestone on the eve of the second anniversary of his death.
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has raised £3.5m since it was set up by the footballing legend in March 2008 to focus on the early detection and treatment of cancer and the clinical trials of new drugs that will eventually beat it.
The new fundraising total was released today and shows the continuing love and support for the former Newcastle, England and Ipswich manager in the North East.
Sir Bobby died on July 31 two years ago surrounded by his family after finally succumbing to the cancer he bravely fought five times.
As he battled for the last 18 months of his life, Sir Bobby, who grew up at Langley Park near Durham, devoted his time to raising funds to support those pioneering the fight against the devastating disease.
Since then many footballing stars, cancer sufferers and members of the public have done all they can to help raise vital funds for the charity.
Pauline Buglass, head of fundraising for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, said: “Everyone involved is mindful that the success of the charity ultimately belongs to one man.
