Alan Shearer awards young North East entrepreneurs with fundraising trophy

NEWCASTLE United legend Alan Shearer has presented young entrepreneurs from the North East with awards for their outstanding work for a regional charity.

The football star attended St Cuthberts Care’s Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award ceremony to present the winning school team with their prize.

The sixth form pupils spent months working on their enterprising ideas to raise as much money as possible for the charity, of which the United star is a patron.

The winning team came from St Thomas More Catholic School in Blaydon, Gateshead, and were over the moon to accept their trophy from the footballing star. All-girls team Solidarity, raised £3,352 despite only starting in January.

Amy Woodhall, team leader on the winning team said the scheme had made her rethink her own life plan.

“I have changed my entire career, now I know I want to go into business management,” said the 17-year-old of Blaydon, Gateshead.

In total 17 teams from 10 schools took part in the initiative with each team receiving £250 seed money from the charity to set up projects they believed would provide the best return on their investment.

The teams have raised a total of £16,250 which, together with matched funding by St Cuthbert’s Care, will fund 150 nights of free respite care at Alan Shearer Short Break Centre.
