ANGRY motorists have hit a supermarket giant with repair bills after contaminated fuel caused their cars to break down.
Bosses at Sainsbury’s were left red-faced after nearly 30 motorists broke down after filling up their vehicles at the store, on Station Road, Cramlington, Northumberland.
It is not exactly clear what caused the damage to cars, but it is believed that water had made its way into the system.
Many vehicles travelled just a few hundred metres before they broke down and motorists were forced to pull over to the side of the road.
Sainsbury’s last night confirmed it had dealt with 29 customers who had been hit by the error and they immediately stopped serving when the problem was spotted.
The company has now issued an apology after it emerged that it had been saddled with a bill to fix dozens of vehicles, as well as handing out £50 gift card vouchers to ease motorists’ anger.
It is believed the fuel was contaminated with water after a fault on the re-supply system as staff filled the tanks last week.
