The Crown was closed in 1999 by its former owners Paul and Anne Murray, who submitted three applications to Tynedale Council’s planning department for permission to turn it into a house.

But the move met with opposition and the applications were refused, forcing the couple to sell to Jim and Sue Hick in 2008, when it was re-opened.

“The villagers have been great - I think they’re mainly glad the pub is open after it was closed for so long a few years back,” Karen added.

“We very much want to be a focus for the community. There’s a fortnightly quiz night and a music night on Thursdays, so there is plenty going on.

“Obviously, it would be great if we could have the same success we’ve had with the Rat.”

The Rat Inn made it on The Michelin Red Guide - a series of annual guide books published by Michelin for over a dozen countries - in 2009.

It is the oldest and best-known European hotel and restaurant guide, and awards the Michelin stars.
