SIR Bobby Robson's widow has met the family of a man who died from cancer after they raised money for her late husband's legacy.
Lady Elsie Robson was so touched by the efforts of Christopher Scott’s family that she arranged to meet them in the Copthorne Hotel, Newcastle, to thank them in person for their donation to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Newcastle United fan Christopher died after suffering from Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The 33-year-old, who was originally from Morpeth but living in Wallsend, North Tyneside at the time of his death, faced gruelling chemotherapy for a number of years but he died on December 14 after complications following a bone marrow transplant.
Before his death, Christopher raised money for the baby care unit at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary and a similar unit at Wansbeck General Hospital after they cared for his niece Toni, who died as a result of a rare genetic disorder in 2007. Determined to carry on fundraising in his name, Christopher’s family raised £1,500 for the Foundation, after donations were made at his black and white themed funeral service.
Lady Robson said: “It was very moving meeting Christopher’s family and they are obviously still very raw in their grief and it must have been painful for them to talk about losing Christopher but it was very courageous of them.
“They are wonderful people and it was a pleasure to meet them.
“The money donated in Christopher’s name will be very well used to help other people fighting cancer.”
Christopher’s mother Phyllis, 58, his sister Melanie, 30, eight-month-old nephew Xavier, and wife Donna, 26, were delighted to meet Lady Robson.
Donna said: “I just couldn’t believe it when she asked to meet us.
“We just thought it was really thoughtful for her to take time out to meet families that have gone through what she has. It was a real comfort to chat to people that have gone through something similar.
“Christopher was such a keen Newcastle United fan and Lady Robson was touched by Christopher’s story. He would have been over the moon to have met her.”
Loved ones of Christopher said their goodbyes at a special service at St Mary’s Church in Morpeth before Christmas.
The service reverberated to the sound of the Blaydon Races before mourners applauded Christopher’s bravery throughout his illness.
