SUNDERLAND’S Nissan and other car companies were yesterday awarded £52m in Government grants to develop green technology.

Nissan is working with Lotus and Jaguar Land Rover to develop new engines for plug-in hybrid versions of their cars.

The three-year project will support three fledging British suppliers of low carbon technology to develop the UK’s supply chain.

It builds on the “Limo Green” project by Jaguar Land Rover, based on its XJ vehicle, and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by three-quarters.

Funding was also provided to help develop an electric bin wagon, lightweight material and new technology using thermal energy to improve vehicle performance.

The Government also set out the eligibility rules for a subsidy of up to £5,000 for motorists buying electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen-fuelled cars.

Cars must meet safety standards as well as minimum range and performance criteria.

Ministers believe the measures will put the UK at the forefront of green car development and provide a competitive edge to global rivals.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said: “I am determined to make this Government the greenest ever and transport will have a key role to play.
