Morpeth relives memories of worst flooding

Fire crews at flooded Bridge Street in Morpeth

VICTIMS of the worst flooding in a Northumberland market town’s history are being given the chance to revive their memories of how the catastrophe devastated the community.

First handwritten and visual records of the September 2008 floods which engulfed 1,000 homes and businesses in Morpeth have gone on show at a four-day exhibition which opened yesterday.

The Voices of the Flood exhibition is aimed at giving people a taste of a major online archive which is being built up as a permanent record of the incident and can be used by researchers and as an educational resource.

The project is using photographs, oral recordings, written stories, video footage, reports and surveys to create a definitive reference point for the flood and its aftermath.

It aims to give future generations an insight into how the local community coped, and will be continually updated.
