Growing objection to plans for Corbridge homes

PLANS to build new homes on an important archaeological site in Northumberland are facing growing opposition.

The proposed site for four new houses in a conservation area at the heart of Corbridge is believed to contain buried Roman and medieval remains.

The village’s parish council, as well as residents at The Orchard, next to the site 50 metres from Main Street, have lodged official protests with Northumberland County Council.

The authority’s west area planning committee meets next week with a recommendation from officers to grant conditional planning permission for the development.

Officers say the semi-detached houses, replacing a disused garage building, will “improve the character and appearance of the site”, but protestors say the development would be dangerous, intrusive and reduce privacy.

Before building work starts, archaeologists want to follow up a 2004 dig in which signs of a 13th or 14th Century structure were unearthed.

However, Corbridge Parish Council doesn’t want work to start at all.
